Spanish Wells to Hopetown Abacos! 3/19-3/28

While waiting for good weather to cross to the Abacos, we took our dinghys to an island next to Spanish Wells, and walked three miles to a cave. This cave was a temporary home for some people who were shipwrecked in the 1600's who came from England to escape religious persecution.

Michael with the lobster on his spear
The afternoon before leaving Eleuthera, we anchored at Egg Island. There was no settlement, so Christine and Michael went spearfishing, while Mom did some snorkeling. Michael, Christine and Emily all worked together to get a lobster.
Mom and I went shelling on a beach and tidal creek, where we found lots of sand dollars, sea biscuits, and a helmet conch.

We had to leave a first light for our 10 hour day to the Abacos. It was rolly, so we kept the Dramamine close at hand! The next morning on our way to Marsh Harbor, we dropped the hook near a reef so Mom and I (Erin) could go snorkeling. It was probably the prettiest reef we've seen. Along with many anglefish and other types of fish, we saw a spotted eagle ray and two baby sea turtles.

We arrived at Marsh Harbor and felt like we had returned to Forida. It was a big town, with lots of people and cars. There was even a stoplight! (although it was broken!) We were finally able to experience an evening of Rake and Scrape. This is a kind of music played by dragging a nail down the blade of a saw. They sometimes also use a washtub with a broomstick and a string attached to make a base. There is also a congo drum. The Bahamian men sing along!

Our next destination was a quaint harbor village called Hopetown. The cottages are painted with bright colors and all the streets are the width of a golf cart! While exploring the town we relaxed in some cute colorful chairs we found on a dock.

We were worried about the Abacos being chilly because they are so far north, but a south wind has been blowing so it is very warm here, which makes for great snorkeling weather!

Hopetown is famous for being home to one of the three remaining manually operated lighthouses in the world. It is open for visitors during the day, and we took the opportunity to climb it's 101 stairs all the way to the top!

From the top of the lighthouse, you have a spectacular view of the harbor at Hopetown and the Sea of Abaco.

Alabaster Bay to Spanish Wells; 3/13 -3/18

After spending a night at Alabaster Bay and a night at Current Cut, we picked up a mooring ball in Spanish Wells.

Approaching Current Cut
Spanish Wells is a small, bustling, fishing community, which supplies the Bahamas with half of all its seafood production.
Mom and Dad were impressed with the colorful, well kept homes here, but the highlight for us were the golf carts available to rent.

We had met a family who was going across the island to deliver Creole Bibles to a Haitian settlement, and we tagged along with them

While the girls were visiting with the Haitian kids, Michael, Dad, Mr. Robnik (from Diamond) and his daughter Emily, went out lobstering.

Both Michael and Mr. Robnik brought home lobsters, and they were both ecstatic.

After dinner one evening, we were treated to a show by a pod of dolphins who swam around our boat for an hour.

Then Michael treated us to a show of his own by swinging out  over the water on the mainsail boom.

The moon is particularly close to the earth right now, which only happens once every 18 years. This means that the tides are more extreme, and Mom and Erin decided to take advantage of the really low tide, and enjoyed an afternoon of shelling.
Mom found a huge variety of unusual shells, but
Erin wanted to see how many bubble shells she could find....

Rock Sound, 3/11-3/12

We spent two nights at Rock Sound. Our friends on Messenger suggested we have dinner at Rose's, on the north side beach. Rose serves meals on her back porch, overlooking the ocean. She cooks wonderful Bahamian food.

We had a buffet style dinner, which included: baked macaroni and cheese, steamed fish, barbecued and jerk chicken, peas and rice, beans and rice, fried conch, plantains, conch and vegetables, and coleslaw.

We were planning to leave early the next morning, but someone had told us about some caves on the island, and we didn't want to miss them.

The caves were amazing.

Trees from the ground above us had roots that extended down about twenty feet to the cave floor

Cape Eleuthera, Eleuthera. 3/10-3/11

On the island of Eleuthera, there is a school for high-school and college aged kids, who come from all over the US to spend a semester in the Bahamas, learning about ecology and human impact on the environment.

We were fortunate to be able to take a tour of the facilities.

The Island School grows food and is very self-supporting.
They were growing sweet potatoes and peanuts on the roof of a building.
Us kids observing the various fish related experiments.
More ways that the Island school is conserving energy and resources... using the fertilized fish  waste water to grow lettuce and other greens

Cambridge Cay; 3/7-3/10

We were looking forward to returning to the Exuma Land and Sea Park, and this time we went to Cambridge Cay. It has lots of cool snorkeling sites, as well as two caves to explore.

Since there is no fishing or lobstering allowed in the Park, we saw a good variety of aquatic life while we were snorkeling.

There was also a submerged plane to snorkel around.

Another interesting spot near Cambridge Cay is Rachel's Bubble Bath.

This was a place you can hike to where waves from the ocean crash over the rocks into a pool, creating what looks like a bubble bath.

The Rocky Dundas were two caves that you had to snorkel into, but once inside they were huge, and had some stalactite and stalagmite formations.

Pipe Creek; 3/6-3/7

We woke up to a much calmer day,and motored to Pipe Creek. Pipe Creek is a beautiful area, and was our last chance for shelling and spearfishing before re-entering the Land and Sea Park.

Pipe Creek has many sandbars and beaches that are dry at low tide, which makes it a great place to find shells.

There is a narrow, shallow channel, where you can drift along with the current, picking up shells. Michael also saw a squid!

Erin found lots of sand dollars . . .

and conch shells!

There is also lots of coral, and Christine speared an 18 inch Nassau Grouper. The season to fish for Nassau Grouper just started March 1st.

Big Majors; 3/1-3/6

Heavy winds from the northeast were forecast for the next several days, so we 'holed up' just west Big Majors Cay. Big Majors is famous for 'Piggy Beach', the home to many wild pigs.

These aren't just any pigs, they are swimming pigs! As soon as they hear your dinghy engine approaching the beach, they swim out to see if you have any food for them.

We were expecting some little pink farmyard piglets, but these were enormous monster-pigs, who swam faster than anything without webbed feet should be allowed to swim.

The strong winds made even a dinghy ride to shore wet and unpleasant, so we spent lots of time visiting with Diamond and Azimuth. We played a hundred games of Kemps over the course of three days.

Farmer's Cay and Black Point; 2/26-3/1

After leaving Emerald Bay, we had another 20 miles in the sound to Farmer's Cay, so we were able to do some deep-water fishing.

We were so excited when we got a 'fish on'! Dad had to really fight with it and told us it must be a big one. Well, it was a big one, until something bigger came along and stole our dinner.

By the size of the head, we're guessing this was about a four-foot wahoo.

We spent two days at Farmer's Cay, then headed north to Black Point Settlement. There we had the opportunity to volunteer at the school.

The one teacher who was there was very appreciative, since the other teachers had yet to return from Nassau after midterm break
She was alone with 48 students, from first to twelfth grade. Erin, Mom, myself, and our two friends from Diamond were each assigned a child to work with.

We enjoyed working with the students, practicing their reading and doing addition and subtraction with flash cards.

The kids were very polite and eager to work.

Emerald Bay Marina; 2/22-2/25

Free showers! Free laundry! Free internet! And a 72 inch flat screen TV. Needless to say, we had a great four days at Emerald Bay Marina. At a dollar a foot, it was easy to stay multiple nights. The boater's lounge was beautiful and we were able to do some of our schoolwork there. We even watched some of our history videos on the flat screen TV.

Michael taught me how to spearfish, and I managed to catch a lobster. It was delicious!

While we were all out spearfishing, Dad spotted this turtle swimming by our boat in the marina.
