Exuma Land and Sea Park

Shroud Cay is the northernmost cay in the Exumas Land and Sea Park. We arrived at midday and went to explore the island. Once again we were amazed at how soft the sand was. The boys started a game of Ultimate Frisbee while the girls waded up the tidal creek. Later, everyone joined in the game of Ultimate. It was a lot of fun, and Mom made an awesome catch so that her team won the game. Unfortunately, we have limited internet again, so we can't put up pictures now, but hopefully we will be able to soon. Mr. Potter (from Ruahk) proposed a race in the dinghies back to the boats. He said that the loser would cook dinner for the winner. The menu was to be: filet mignon, fresh asparagus, and peanut butter parfait. We won, but we're still waiting for our dinner to be delivered. . .
Later that evening, we serenaded the entire anchorage with worship songs. Dad accompanied us on violin, and Mr. Potter, played guitar. Inexplicably, the next morning a number of boats left the anchorage.
Monday morning we had an early dismissal from school. At 10 am, we packed a lunch and loaded up the dinghies. We explored a tidal creek that led to an ocean beach on the east side of the island. It was beautiful winding our way through the mangroves. It was warm enough for us kids to go swimming (but not the adults), and the waves were great! A short hike up a hill led to the remains of a camp used by the DEA to spy on drug smugglers at Norman's Cay, the next island to the north. The drug raid took place in the '70s, and Norman Cay is now free from the drug smugglers and we'll probably visit it on our way back north, so that we can snorkel a plane wreck from the years of drug smuggling.
That afternoon, Mom and Michael both took turns joining the Potters on their kayak, exploring another creek.
Tuesday morning we motored south to Waderick Wells, where the park headquarters are located. We went on a fascinating hike around the island, where we saw a skeleton of a whale, blow holes, and stunning 360 degree views of the entire island. Blow holes are holes in the ground that connect with caves along the coast, so that as the waves splash into the caves, air is forced up into the hole.
One of the most famous parts of Waderick Wells is Boo Boo Hill. This is a place where, for years, boaters have carved their boat name in driftwood to be added to a sort of monument. It was fun to read all of the boat names and look for boating friends who have come here before. We added Sheet Music to the collection.
We plan to stay here tomorrow, exploring the snorkeling sites and more of the hiking trails on the island.

Exumas!!!

We left Nassau and went just a few miles to Bottom Harbor, near Rose Island. We explored the uninhabited island and found a hammock there. Erin wanted to sleep out in the hammock that night, but there was impending weather, so she wasn't allowed to do it this time.

Traveling to the Exumas on the banks was just as beautiful as everyone said it would be. We were in 20-30 feet of water all day, and we could see starfish on the bottom. Our friends on Ruahk asked if any of us would like to be towed along behind them on their kayak. Erin and I took them up on their offer and had a great time enjoying the warm sun and clear water. We anchored at Highbourne Cay (pronounced key) with Ruahk, and after we took Tazzie to shore, we went snorkeling.

The coral and fish were beautiful, and it was fun watching the Ruahk kids spear fish. Spear guns are not legal in the Bahamas, but Hawaiian slings are. Hawaiin slings are five and a half foot spears which you launch from your hand with a sort of slingshot. The boys caught a few small fish.
We had a peaceful evening on the hook, and the adults came over to visit while us kids all watched movies on Ruahk. The next morning we decided to come into a marina because another front was coming through. Marinas in the Exumas are few and far between, and also quite expensive. To give you an idea, if you wanted to buy a cucumber in the marina store, it cost six dollars and sixty-five cents. If you stay in the marina, you can dispose of your trash for free, however, if you anchor out and bring trash to shore for disposal the first two bags are five dollars each, and twenty-five for each bag after that.
We've enjoyed exploring the island; there's a long beach here with powdery soft white sand. Mom and Michael borrowed bikes from the marina and rode the length of the island on it's two roads. At one point, they saw a sign for a spring, and since it was a hot day, they followed the sign. They found another sign that pointed into some brush, and after bushwhacking several yards, they found a sign that said "HAH! A spring" pointing to a rusty old metal spring mounted on a tree.  There was also a bench with a bus stop sign. There was a skeleton sitting on the bench, waiting for the bus. (There are no buses here!)
Since it was a rainy evening, we passed the time playing games. Tomorrow, we'll meet up with Ruahk (who didn't come into the marina) at Shroud Cay, which is part of the Exuma Land and Sea Park.

Nassau, Bahamas!

We left the Berry Islands Sunday morning to head to Nassau. When we left the inlet, we had really big waves on our bow, so that made for a rough ride. However, after the water became deeper, it wasn't as bad. The reason the waves were so bad coming out of the inlet was because we had winds from the east, and the tide was going out. The inlet faced the east, which would normally have pushed the water in the inlet, but since the tide was going out, there was opposing winds and currents. We did some fishing on the way to Nassau, and we caught a Mahi-Mahi, but it tossed the hook and got away. It was really pretty, though, and we were all glad to see something that wasn't barracuda!

We arrived at Nassau around 2:30. We decided to take a slip at a marina, and we were able to do some laundry. Also, we had our mail delivered here, so we were all excited to get that. That evening, Michael, Mom and I walked around the town.

The next day, we decided to go to Atlantis. Atlantis is a huge resort hotel with a waterpark and aquarium. The aquarium was really neat, filled with sharks and rays and all different types of fish. Outside, there was a shark tank with a glass covered walkway through the middle. You could walk through the tank and see the sharks swim over the glass tube.

At the water park, there were several water slides, both with tubes and without. Some of the slides went through a shark tank, so that was really cool! Also, there was a lazy river, and a not-so lazy river. The not-so lazy river was called The Current, and was filled with rapids and waves. We spent all of Monday at Atlantis with Ruahk. We were able to get a slip at the marina there, and, since check out time wasn't till 11 Tuesday morning, we went back and did some of our favorite rides this morning.

This afternoon we provisioned and are preparing to head to the Exumas tomorrow. Internet is limited in the Exumas, but hopefully we'll be able to use the SPOT tracker to let you all know where we are!

The Berry Islands

Sunday we sailed from Lucaya to Bullocks Harbor in the Berry Islands. We left at first light, and watched the sun rise over the ocean.

It was a long day, about 60 miles, but the seas were fairly calm, and the wind was light. We motorsailed the whole way. We trolled for some fish, and we caught three barracuda, but we had to throw them back, because they aren't good for eating. Everyone was excited to take part in the fishing until it became time to take the barracuda off the hook. Dad was the only was brave enough to get his fingers so close to their sharp teeth. Our friends caught a small mahi-mahi, and shared a piece with us, and whetted our appetites to catch some more.
Since we got in to Bullocks Harbor so late, we only had time to take Tazzie to shore; we didn't really get to walk around. There was a really pretty sunset over the ocean.

After a leisurely breakfast of Michael's breakfast burritos, we left Bullocks Harbor. From Bullocks Harbor to our next anchorage was only nine miles, so we motorsailed slowly while we did some more fishing. Well, maybe we should just say we fed some more barracuda. We're still looking for that elusive mahi-mahi (or tuna or wahoo or anything else we could put on the dinner table). We arrived at Slaughter Harbor around 1 pm and had plenty of time to swim and explore the beaches. It was a little chilly, so Erin, Mom and I put on our wetsuits, which was quite a fiasco. Michael and Mom went snorkeling, and she got to try out her new underwater camera. Slaughter Harbor is bordered by an island that belongs to a cruise line. They renamed it Cocoa Cay, for obvious reasons. That night, us kids went over to Ruahk for 'gennie time' and enjoyed watching a movie with them. Gennie time is the one hour each evening when they turn on their generator, so the kids are allowed to plug in laptops and play games and watch movies. During that time, the adults visited on our boat.
The next day we had about a 20 miles trip, which we lengthened to 25, so that we could stay in deep water and do some more fishing (feeding more barracuda). Even though we aren't catching edible fish, it's still a lot of fun. The first person who hears the whiz of the line paying out of the rod, yells "Fish on!" Dad and Michael run for the rod, Mom grabs the helm and put the boat in neutral, Erin grabs Tazzie, who wants to be friends with everything we catch, and I grab the bottle of whiskey, the pliers, the gloves, and the camera. We learned that barracuda with a few drops of whiskey in them, don't seem to snap at Dad's fingers quite so rigorously.

Michael casting out the fishing line with the ballyhoo bait.
When we ran out of bait, we anchored in Little Harbor, and set the anchor well. Another front is coming through and we'll have a lot of wind for a few days. Michael, Erin and Mom went to shore to enjoy the beach. It was our warmest day so far, and we were all ready for a swim.  Today the front came through and it's been windy all day. Mom and Dad went to explore a  place called Flo's in a nearby cove. It's a restaurant, but you have to call early in the day to tell them what you would like to order. They serve conch, fish, lobster and burgers. Apparently, the man who runs the restaurant is the only person on the whole island, and he cooks meals for passing cruisers. His property is filled with piles of beautiful harvested queen conch shells. We're running low on produce, and the man at Flo's was willing to sell us some tomatoes. We bought two for a dollar a piece.
The wind isn't going to let up for several days, so we'll be in the Berrys for a few more days. We might explore some different anchorages, but we're not making the trip to Nassau till the weather calms down.

Crossing to the Bahamas

 The Crossing
At 8:45 we cast off the lines and left Lake Worth. We followed our friends on Ruahk and at the inlet Absolutely, another boat we met at Vero Beach, fell in line behind us. It was a pitch black night with no moon, but as we left the lights of Palm Beach behind us, millions of stars appeared. There are so many more stars out there when you're not surrounded by the lights of cities and towns. The wind and seas weren't as calm as we had hoped, but it was still a fine crossing. The adults on the other boats took turns sleeping, but my mom was a little too nervous to sleep. My dad caught a couple quick naps in the cockpit. Being ever the science teacher, Mom had us take temperature readings, and we recorded the latitude and longitude as we crossed the Gulf Stream. Later, we hope to graph the position of the Gulf Stream. Michael and I had some time in the cockpit initially, but were able to get a lot of sleep. Erin fell slept early, but then woke up and stayed up till 4, helping Mom keep watch while Dad slept. We passed several big ships during the night (two were cruise ships) and it was easy to see them, but it was hard to tell how far away they were and what direction and speed they were traveling. Thankfully, Ruahk has an AIS system which identifies the name, heading and speed of anything within several miles. That made us feel much more comfortable. One benefit to having a very dark night was that shortly after the glow from Palm Beach faded, we could see the glow of lights from Freeport. As soon as the sun came up we were able to see land. The morning was fun, we saw flying fish (which are fish that actually leap out of the water and flap their fins like wings) and I saw what I think was a sea turtle. The water was a bright blue color, and as we approached our entrance channel, we were amazed that we could see the bottom at 16 feet! On our way in, we raised our yellow quarantine flag, which shows that we have not yet cleared customs. We tied up in Port Lucaya and only the captain of the boat was allowed to get off and go to the customs office. He came back with a ton of paperwork to fill out, but when he returned, we were cleared to stay for 120 days (we had heard reports about some people only getting 30 days, so it was a big relief).

The Bahamas
Wednesday was a sunny warm day here, so we decided to dinghy back out the channel to a beach. Ruahk joined us, and it was chilly but we still managed to get in some swimming. The wind was picking up so the dinghy ride back was quite an adventure, with waves coming over the bow. We're staying in Lucaya a few days because of windy weather, so tonight we met Ruahk for another fun game of Catan. This weekend we plan to leave for the Berry Islands.

We're here!

We arrived at Lucaya (Bahamas) safe and sound. Had a great crossing. It's really beautiful here. We're at a dock clearing customs right now, so that's why we've got internet. We're not sure where we're headed from here, but the weather is warm and the water is clear, and we're happy to be here!

to the BAHAMAS!!!

We are currently at a marina in Lake Worth, getting ready to leave for the Bahamas! The plan is to leave tonight, around nine, with a couple other boats we've met. We are going to Lucaya, and it will be roughly a 15 hour trip. We'll let you know how the crossing went next time we get internet, which will be in the BAHAMAS!!!

We hoisted Michael up in the bosun's chair, (wrapped in Christmas lights) and then slowly lowered him to the deck while counting down! We actually did this a few minutes before midnight, because right at midnight, my brother jumped off the side of the boat in his swim suit and a t-shirt!!!
Happy New Year!
