Pipe Creek; 3/6-3/7

We woke up to a much calmer day,and motored to Pipe Creek. Pipe Creek is a beautiful area, and was our last chance for shelling and spearfishing before re-entering the Land and Sea Park.



Pipe Creek has many sandbars and beaches that are dry at low tide, which makes it a great place to find shells.







There is a narrow, shallow channel, where you can drift along with the current, picking up shells. Michael also saw a squid!







Erin found lots of sand dollars . . .













and conch shells!













There is also lots of coral, and Christine speared an 18 inch Nassau Grouper. The season to fish for Nassau Grouper just started March 1st.

Big Majors; 3/1-3/6

Heavy winds from the northeast were forecast for the next several days, so we 'holed up' just west Big Majors Cay. Big Majors is famous for 'Piggy Beach', the home to many wild pigs.

These aren't just any pigs, they are swimming pigs! As soon as they hear your dinghy engine approaching the beach, they swim out to see if you have any food for them.

We were expecting some little pink farmyard piglets, but these were enormous monster-pigs, who swam faster than anything without webbed feet should be allowed to swim.
































The strong winds made even a dinghy ride to shore wet and unpleasant, so we spent lots of time visiting with Diamond and Azimuth. We played a hundred games of Kemps over the course of three days.

Farmer's Cay and Black Point; 2/26-3/1

After leaving Emerald Bay, we had another 20 miles in the sound to Farmer's Cay, so we were able to do some deep-water fishing.

We were so excited when we got a 'fish on'! Dad had to really fight with it and told us it must be a big one. Well, it was a big one, until something bigger came along and stole our dinner.

By the size of the head, we're guessing this was about a four-foot wahoo.

We spent two days at Farmer's Cay, then headed north to Black Point Settlement. There we had the opportunity to volunteer at the school.

The one teacher who was there was very appreciative, since the other teachers had yet to return from Nassau after midterm break
She was alone with 48 students, from first to twelfth grade. Erin, Mom, myself, and our two friends from Diamond were each assigned a child to work with.

We enjoyed working with the students, practicing their reading and doing addition and subtraction with flash cards.

The kids were very polite and eager to work.

Emerald Bay Marina; 2/22-2/25

Free showers! Free laundry! Free internet! And a 72 inch flat screen TV. Needless to say, we had a great four days at Emerald Bay Marina. At a dollar a foot, it was easy to stay multiple nights. The boater's lounge was beautiful and we were able to do some of our schoolwork there. We even watched some of our history videos on the flat screen TV.


Michael taught me how to spearfish, and I managed to catch a lobster. It was delicious!













While we were all out spearfishing, Dad spotted this turtle swimming by our boat in the marina.
